# How to help your kids bond with grandparents who live far away

Updated 2026-10-25

Kids bond with faraway grandparents through small, regular, shared activities more than long calls. Set a weekly rhythm, give the call a job (a game, a story, a shared book), let the child lead, and keep it short. The grandparent's stories, told a little at a time, are what make the relationship personal.

## Why do calls with grandparents fizzle?

"How was school?" "Fine." Open-ended questions put a child on the spot, and a screen makes it worse. Most short calls aren't a sign that the child doesn't care. The call simply has no shape.

## Give every call a job

- Play a game that needs both of you: 20 questions, a drawing challenge, or a puzzle where each holds half the clues.
- Read together: the grandparent reads one chapter per call.
- Show and tell: the child shows one thing from their week; the grandparent shows one thing from their past.
- Teach each other: the child teaches an app or a dance; the grandparent teaches a card trick or a word in the family's language.

## How often, and for how long?

Weekly beats occasional. Ten focused minutes every Sunday builds more than an hour once a month. Young children (4 to 7) do best with 5 to 10 minutes; older kids can go longer when there's something to do.

Pick a day and keep it, but allow a pause week without guilt. A missed week shouldn't feel like failure.

## What about different time zones?

When live calls are hard, let the connection run asynchronously: a voice note, a photo, a puzzle solved separately and compared later. The habit matters more than doing it at the same moment.

## Help grandparents share their stories

Children remember stories, not facts. A grandparent's childhood street, first job or favorite food becomes real to a child when it's told as a story, or turned into a game. Prompt the grandparent with specific questions, one per call.

## Let the child see their own life reflected

Relationships run both ways. Ask the grandparent to ask about the child's friends, school and interests, and to remember them next time. Being remembered is how kids know they matter.
