Gifts for long-distance grandparents: 15 ideas that keep you close
Updated
The best gifts for long-distance grandparents create regular contact with the grandkids rather than more things on a shelf: a weekly activity they do together, a recorded story project, a photo frame the family updates, or a standing call ritual. Pick something that still works in March, not just on the day it's opened.
What makes a good gift for grandparents who live far away?
Most grandparents who live far from their grandkids say the same thing: they don't need more stuff, they want more of the kids. A good gift solves a real problem: calls that fizzle in two minutes, missing the small moments, or feeling out of date with a growing child's life.
Ask three questions before you buy: Does it involve the grandkids directly? Does it repeat, so there's a reason to connect next week too? Can the grandparent use it without help?
Gifts that create a weekly ritual
- A weekly cooperative game. Ours, for example, gives the grandparent half the clues to a mystery and the grandkid the other half, so they have to call each other to solve it.
- A shared book. Buy two copies of the same chapter book and have the grandparent read a chapter on each call.
- A recipe swap. A small box of recipe cards: each month the grandparent and grandkid cook the same dish on a video call.
- A pen-pal kit. Stationery, stamps and addressed envelopes for both sides. Kids love real mail.
- A standing "Sunday call" with a theme each week: show-and-tell, a joke contest, a drawing challenge.
Gifts that capture their stories
- A memoir service that sends weekly prompts and prints a book (check Storyworth and Remento for current prices; in October 2026 their own sites showed Storyworth from $69 and Remento at $99).
- A list of good questions for the grandkids to ask on calls (our free question generator makes one by age).
- A simple voice recorder, or a phone set up with a recording app, for stories in their own voice.
- A family-tree poster the grandkids help fill in.
Gifts that keep them in the loop
- A digital photo frame the whole family can send pictures to.
- A monthly printed photo book or postcard of the grandkids.
- A shared family calendar with school plays and games, so they can call before and after.
- Tickets to visit, or to host the grandkids, even a year out. Anticipation counts.
What if the grandparent isn't comfortable with technology?
Pick gifts that need one tap or none. Anything that requires an app download, a password or a new account will often go unused. Paper (letters, recipe cards, books) and anything that works from a link in an email are the safest choices.
When should the gift start?
For holiday gifts, consider a start date in early January. December is busy, and a gift that begins after the holidays gives everyone something to look forward to once the decorations come down.
